Dear Wildcat Family,

As you may be aware, our Varsity Girls program has made an historic run during this year’s basketball season. This past Wednesday, our Lady Cats defeated Arab to earn the right to represent the Northeast Region at the 2018 AHSAA Final Four Basketball Tournament held at the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center. This will be the first time since 1978 that our Lady Cat program has reached such heights. As their Superintendent, I cannot put in to words how proud I am of their accomplishments this year.

The Lady Cats, led by Coach Wynn, are scheduled to play Central-Tuscaloosa on Wednesday, February 28th at 6:00 p.m. While I certainly respect the instructional nature of what we do, educational and cultural experiences can be had outside of the walls of our school system. With that said, on Wednesday we will release school at the elementary level at 12:15 p.m. and secondary level at 1:00 p.m.

This decision will give all of our Wildcat Family the opportunity to attend the game if they so choose. All students, administrators, faculty, and support staff will be home no later than 2:00 p.m. and this will give everyone ample time to get safely to the game. I am confident that each of us understands the time needed to maneuver through Birmingham adequately in order to be present and on time to cheer our Lady Cats on. I am also confident that each of us understands that we want to provide the opportunity for our families to be able to enjoy this once in a lifetime opportunity as that – a family. This move will allow also faculty and support staff to stay at school during the day and provide adequate supervision for the safety of our students which brings me comfort.

I look forward to seeing all of the Wildcat Family at the BJCC at 6:00 p.m. next Wednesday night as we pull for our Lady Cats. Win or lose, they have brought so much pride to Our City. It truly is a great day to be a Wildcat. I will see you at the Final Four.

Warmest Regards,

Jose Reyes, Jr., Ed.D.
